How to Choose a Wig Colour That Suits You

Article by Gareth Hoyle

Everyone has different types and tones of hair. Millions of pounds are spent on hair styling and colouring every year but there is only so much that can be done with the natural hair type.

If you have very fine or thinning hair then it can be difficult to achieve the hair styles you want. Also changing hair colour regularly can be expensive and damaging on your hair. This is why it can be a good idea to invest in a wig. Wigs can be styled in many different attractive designs and can offer a fast way for you to get the hair style you have always wanted.

Types of Wigs

There are many different styles and designs available for wigs. You could choose a trimmed blonde wig for that short, sassy style or a long black wig for a glamorous evening look. Wigs are made with both synthetic and human hair. Synthetic wigs are cheaper and available in a wide range of both natural and eye catching colours. Human hair wigs are more expensive but they are more natural looking and last a long time.

Choosing Wig Colour

The number one rule when choosing a wig is to compliment your skin tone and eye colour. This is an important part of ensuring that the wig flatters you and looks natural. For example if you want a blonde wig then you can adapt the subtle tones to make sure it suits your colouring better. To identify your skin tone you can put on a white shirt and stand in daylight. Now look in the mirror and observe your facial colouring. Here are the following identifying factors you can use to judge skin tone:

Warm Skin Tone – warm skin will typically have a pale peach colour with undertones of yellow and warm gold. You may also have a few freckles and a pinkish tone across your cheeks. Also take a quick look at the veins in your arms. Many people find it easier to identify a warm skin tone by checking if the veins look more green than blue.Cool Skin Tone – cool skin is often very pale and appears to have no distinctive overall tone. You may have a bluish or reddish undertone around the eyes and your skin could look slightly translucent. Also check the veins in your arms. If they are more blue than green you most likely have a cool skin tone.Olive and Dark Skin Tones – olive and dark complexions can be both warm and cool. Golden and darker colours can indicate warm tones and paler, more sallow hues can indicate cool tones. In general warm skin tones will suit a rich brown, warm red or golden blonde wig. Very light blond and deep brown/black colours can draw the golden warmth from your skin making you look flushed and sallow. Cool skin tones look best in strong colours so dark brown (not red brown), deep black, and light blond wigs are very effective.
