Maintaining Your Hair Extensions.

There are lots of different hair extensions on the market nowadays. You can choose from real human hair or synthetic hair and from a wide range of application options. But whatever type of hair extensions you opt for, you need to look after them. Hair extensions require time and effort to keep them looking fresh for the longest possible time. Hair extensions don’t generally come cheap, especially if you opt for human hair ones. Therefore, you will want to keep them around for as long as possible.
Most stylists will recommend that you use the after-care products that are specifically made for your extension type. This is because if your extensions are bonded in, some shampoos and conditioners may actually cause the bond to break down and for the extensions to fall out. If you do not use the products recommended by your stylist then you should check the ingredients in the products you are using. Look out for products that contain silicone or alcohol as these can damage the bonds. Be careful with Pantene products as these coat the hair and Head and Shoulders as this strips the hair. Both of these products are known to speed up the rate at which the bond is broken down. If your extensions do start to fall out at a rapid rate and before their “expiration date” check out the ingredients in your shampoo and talk to your stylist. It may be as simple as swapping products.
If your extensions are sewn in in wefts you will not need to worry about damaging the bonds with the products you use. You can basically wash and dry your hair in the exact same way that you would your normal hair.
If regularly colour your hair and are thinking about getting hair extensions then you need to plan ahead. You need to colour your natural hair before having the extensions put in and your stylist will then colour match your extensions so that they blend in perfectly.
When it comes to styling it depends on what sort of hair you have opted for. If you have gone for real hair then you can pretty much style your hair in the same way that you would your own. You can curl, straighten and blow-dry the hair as normal. However, if you have gone for the cheaper option of synthetic hair then more care needs to be taken. Always follow the advice given to you from your stylist. They will be able to give you the specific rules that you need to know depending on your extension type. With most types of extensions you can style your hair in ponytails, braids, buns or whatever you want really!
When it comes to taking the extensions out, the quickest way is to cut the extensions out but this will of course result in a very short hair cut. You always need to go back to your stylist to get the extensions removed and not attempt to do them yourself. If you have synthetic extensions in, the area that is bonded will be heated up slightly which will loosen the glue’s hold on the hair. With real hair extensions a special solvent is applied to the connection which helps to release the bond. If your natural hair and scalp are still in good condition you might choose to have more extensions put in on the same day. If there is any damage to your hair or scalp then it is advisable to wait and fix the problem before having any more extensions put in.
Hair extensions can dramatically change your look but you need to make sure that you look after them and follow your stylist’s advice in order for them to last for as long as possible. If you follow this short guide you really will be able to get the best out of your extensions!
