Hair extensions are the “in” thing these days. All the celebrities are doing it and we all have to admit that it does wonders for their look. Obviously, they use the high-end stuff which costs hundreds of dollars; but there are other more affordable options for those who are tight on the budget.

Extensions are simply classified by their method of application. You can choose between individual hair extensions or Wefts.

Individual Hair Extensions – around 20 to 50 strands of natural or synthetic hair is attached to the base of your own hair. They can be attached by several means-weaving, heat fusing, gluing, clamping with metal rods or using waxes and polymers. A chemical coat is used on your hair in order for effectively attach the strands and also to avoid too much damage. These extensions usually last for about 3 to 4 months before they have to be taken out and completely re-done. The downside to any hair extension procedure is the damage every time they are taken-out.

Natural hair is still the best option for a totally flawless look. Of course, this costs more than synthetic hair applied via individual hair extension. Some salons even charge by the hour but again, it’s a case to case situation. The length of the extensions will also be a factor.

Weft Hair Extensions – This type of application involves the use of thicker clamps of hair. They are held together at one end. The clamp is either weaved in or glued on the base of the scalp. Expert salons can make Wefts look better than it should but more often than not, bad results come from this application style. Choosing natural hair for a Weft is the next best thing if your budget has a limit. Synthetic hair clamps are made in various hair colors. This option is ideal for those who just plan on wearing a look for a short time.
