Treatment of Lice ~ Hair Home Treatments
Parents have become so frustrated with repeated treatment of lice and attempts to combat an infestation of nits that they are willing to go to such extremes…out of desperation…to rid their child of these pesky vermints…Some parents have even gone to such lengths as to cut their child’s hair short, often leading to a traumatized child.
Head Lice Home Treatments: Don’t resort to these drastic measures when there are other natural hair home treatments available at a fraction of the cost and work more effectively, without damaging your child’s natural hair follicles.
Natural Lice Head Treatment
Hair Lice Remedies: Hairspray ~ Preventing Lice: If you encounter an outbreak of lice at your child’s school, the first step to preventing lice from being attracted to a head of hair, is to spray a thick coat of strong spelling, super hold hairspray on the hair before leaving the house (costs less then the commercialized lice products on the market). The spray will create a barrier for lice to penetrate the scalp. The lice will also be repulsed by the smell of the hair spray. Instruct your child to douse their hair again, if necessary, midday….as a precaution and as a refresher.
Vegetable Shortening and Vinegar: Suspected symptoms for lice–If you do happen to come down with head lice…saturate the hair with a thick coat of vegetable shortening applied to the hair and roots (use lard, shortening, rather than oil for a more suffocating effect). Make it good and thick. Put a shower cap on, or wrap the head with plastic wrap, above the eyes, nose and mouth, and let sit for two hours. Afterward shampoo hair thoroughly. (Read below about using your regular shampoo.) The oils in the shortening suffocate head lice and prevent oxygen from getting to the eggs. It will also condition the hair and makes a great moisturizer. Rinse hair with (AVC) vinegar, catch the vinegar in a bucket then reapply (see note below), eventually rinse with clear, hot water. Comb hair with a nit comb to remove the dead eggs. Repeat one week later. Note: AVC (apple cider vinegar) will not destroy the natural pH balance to hair as with white vinegar, which is much harsher on hair follicles. (See notes below if you are having difficulty removing the lard from the hair)
Use Vinegar for Head Lice ~ AVC (Apple Cider Vinegar): Adult lice lay eggs, called nits, which stick like ‘glue’ to the hair shafts. After treating hair with a vegetable shortening (see above), or any of the remedies listed below, rinse hair thoroughly (over a ‘catch’ bucket) with AVC then reapply several times. The AVC dissolves the “glue,” allowing you to comb the nits from hair easily with a nit comb. (Careful with AVC, too much use and it will strip the ‘natural’ oils from hair creating dry and damaged hair—do not prolong use—use in moderation).
Baby Oil and Dawn: Use as a hair protectant. Saturate hair with Johnson’s Baby Oil (only trusted oil, besides olive oil) and cover with a shower cap (or wrap the head with plastic wrap—avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth) and let sit for two hours. The lice drown in the baby oil. Wash the baby oil from hair with Dawn Dishwashing liquid. Repeat one week later.
Antiseptic Mouthwash: Wet the hair and scalp with an antiseptic mouthwash, cover with a shower cap and wait two hours. Make sure the mouthwash is a strong antiseptic so it will kill the lice and prevent further infestation. A cheap brand will work just as well as long as it has strong antiseptic properties.
]]>
Lysol: Also a great antiseptic…To clean brushes and combs (particularly a nit comb), soak the items in Lysol, then rinse them with hot water. Lysol works the same way as the bleach and mouthwash mentioned above. Note: Lysol tends to be harsher on hair then other hair home treatments. It can be used but will dry the hair.
Tree Tea Oil for Head Lice: In preventing lice, shampoo hair regularly with tea tree shampoo. Tea tree oil, from the Melaleuca tree, is a natural ‘louse’ repellent. Tea tree contains antiseptic properties.
Olive Oil for Head Lice and AVC: Saturate hair with olive oil (the best of the best hair oil) and cover with a shower cap (or wrap the hair in plastic wrap—avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth) and let set for two hours to kill head lice and make removing nits easier. Follow by rinsing with AVC and comb out the nits with a nit comb.
Mayonnaise for Head Lice and AVC: Saturate hair completely with a thick coat of mayonnaise (a cheap brand will contain plenty of thick oils), working the mayonnaise in the hair and roots well. Wrap hair with plastic wrap (above the eyes, nose and mouth) or put a shower cap on. Let set for two hours. Shampoo hair thoroughly. The strong fatty oil in the mayonnaise will suffocate and kill head lice and nits. Besides, the mayonnaise is also an excellent hair conditioner. Rinse hair with AVC (apple cider vinegar) repeatedly, then rinse clean with water and comb hair with a nit comb. Repeat one week later.
Bleach: While you are in the washing frenzies, using lice-killing shampoos, laundering clothes and bed linens (use bleach when washing linens in the wash cycle and high heat in the dryer)…try adding ½ a cup of bleach to a sink full of water and soak all combs, brushes, barrettes, and hair clips in the solution, let them soak for at least an hour… then rinse thoroughly with hot water. Don’t forget razors, tweezers or any other ‘equipment’ used in or around hair.
Plastic Trash Bags: Quarantine your child’s favorite stuffed animal. What a great way to teach a child about hibernation. Place all comforters, quilts and stuffed animals in plastic trash bags, tie shut, and store in the garage for two weeks. Lice cannot survive without a human host. The eggs take one week to hatch, so after two weeks all the lice should be dead and your child’s “favorite pet” will then be ‘starved’ for lots of love just like an animal comes out of hibernation and starved for food. (But please instruct your child about the difference.)
Symptoms for lice ~ Strange Facts:
Medicated lice shampoos may cause serious side effects in children and should never be used without a doctor’s supervision.
Most people resort to a lice shampoo containing the pesticide pyrethrin (derived from chrysanthemums) or permethrin (a synthetic form of pyrethrin). Recent Harvard studies indicate that lice are becoming pyrethrin resistant. These lice are becoming more resilient to the commercialized medicated products on the market today. That is why it is very important to become familiar with natural hair home treatments.
The medical term for a lice infestation is pediculosis.
The word louse, the singular form of the word lice, is slang for “a bad person.”
The word nitwit originated from the false idea that head lice infest only poor, uneducated children. Not so!! Don’t be humiliated, frustrated or embarrassed if your child comes down with lice. Lice have become more resilient to the commercialized medicated products on the market. According to data from Harvard researches, there are ‘superlice at large in the land.’ This gives more reason to experiment further into natural home hair remedies.
The term nit-picking originated from the tedious act of having to pick every nit from the head of a person infested with lice. This is a great time to teach your children about why apes and monkeys ‘groom’ themselves.
The expression “going over it with a fine-tooth comb” stems from combing the hair of a lice-infested person with a fine-tooth comb to get rid of all the nits, dead or alive.
Lice burrow into the scalp to feed on human blood. A chemical in their saliva stops blood from clotting. This chemical causes the persistent itching effect.
Female lice lay up to ten eggs a day. In a week the eggs hatch…in two weeks, with proper treatment…they can be disposed of.—Learn and know your remedies.
Note: To remove excess oil (especially petroleum jelly) from the hair…but only to be used on a short time basis for it will strip the natural oils, pH, of the hair use the following as a rinse:
Cornmeal or cornstarch (dry shampoo, best choice for natural alternative, however you may spend days with greasy hair)
Dawn dish detergent (best, fastest alternative, but will dry hair)
Goop hand cleaner—this is an extreme but if necessary, use—will dry out hair.
Wisk laundry detergent—also an extreme due to stripping the hair of the natural oils.
*Whichever you use—be careful not to get detergent into eyes.
*Many shampoos on the market today interfere with the effectiveness of the hair lice remedies. The only shampoo found so far to combat hair lice with medicated ingredients or hair home treatments was Prell. Remember, according to Harvard research studies, you are now dealing with ‘superlice’, which are adapting to commercialized remedies…but yet so far…have not adapted to natural hair remedies at home….

Tips for Natural Treatment for Hair Loss
Article by Igor
It just makes a lot of sense that since hair develops from your scalp; properly caring for your scalp is definitely an integral part of good hair care specially when you need a treatment for hair loss. Your scalp must be properly supplied with the right amount of nutrients in order to make a healthy environment for hair growth. All the same, you might be surprised on how many experts in line with hair growth treatment miss that important point.
Non-Organic Treatment For Hair Loss Is Bad
Those so-called hair care experts will suggest you to bombard your scalp with harmful chemicals in the hopes of somehow fertilizing the follicle as a great treatment for loss. Instead, these will just tend to raise the existing harmful chemicals in your hair follicles which are the main culprits of your troubled hair. These harmful chemicals cause damage to your scalp, restricting the growth of it and causing swelling. So you ask, how to get healthy hair?
In place of chemical remedies, the best treatment for hair loss focuses on improving the general health of your scalp soothingly and naturally. Having a healthy scalp would translate to having a healthy follicle that is free to make the hair grow. If you want to have a healthy scalp, the following are some tips on treatment for hair loss that should get you started.
Getting To The Point With Some Tips On Treatment For Hair Loss
Look for a balanced among clean and just too clean scalp. Having your scalp thoroughly clean is an integral part of the treatment for hair loss. Cleaning will get rid of the excess sebum that contains the harmful toxins. Cleaning your scalp also eliminates the damaging germs which deteriorate the hair follicle’s general wellness. On a regular basis, you must clean your hair, although cleaning it much frequently will flush away too much of your skin’s natural conditioning sebum and will lead to severe drying. When this happens, small dead skin cells will tend to accumulate in your scalp and will tend to clog the follicles of it. This will eventually prohibit the growth and restricts the effectiveness or other treatment for hair loss.
At night, raise the humidity. This strategy is actually one of the most commonly known treatments for other skin concerns such as eczema and psoriasis. Those individuals suffering from these skin issues are aware that moist, warm environment encourages healing within their skin. In this very same way, your skin on your scalp will respond to hair concerns.
Find a spare time to provide your scalp a good and nice massage. It is a generally accepted fact that massages can actually promote rapid healing by increasing the circulation while on the treatment for hair loss. In your scalp, this only implies that the healing nutrients found on your diet can more easily penetrate through your problematic hair follicle. Majority of hair fall regimens include scalp massages, along with a topical treatment in order to promote the growth of new hair and stop hair falling.
Treatment for hair loss must be done from inside out. These are great remedies for your hair and scalp. They will encourage hair growth and assist the follicles of the hair to heal. Treating your scalp however from only the external can only do a lot. You may heal the follicles of the hair externally with organic hair products, although this will not prevent the assault coming from the inside. This is why you also have to pay attention to correcting issues from the inside the body that might play a role in hair loss.

Different Types of Hair Extensions
Article by D J Griffiths
There are various types of hair extensions available in the market today such as clips, metal tubing, weaves and adhesive based fusion. Clip in hair extensions are the best, they do not damage your hair much. They are also very easy to apply. Clip in hair extensions come with various advantages such as they increase the volume of your hair, give it a better texture and also give you the choice of adding any color you want. You do not need any professional help to clip the hair you can do it on your own. Just separate your hair and start from the nape of your neck. The number of clips should be according to the volume you want to increase in your hair. You simply clip the hair all the way up to your head. For more prominent results you should make your own hair styles with clip in hair extensions. Clip in air extensions can be worn for as long as you want but you should take them out before hitting the bed to go to sleep. Looking at their comfort zone, some people wear them rarely whereas some people wear them daily. Clip in hair extensions do not damage your hair plus they are also very reasonable. They are the only hair extensions which are made out of pure human hair and thus are extremely good in quality. Hair length available is 11 inch to 28 inch. Bonding/sealing is another type of hair extension. This happens by parting your hair and painting with a bonding solution, this result is extending the seal around your hair. It is better to get bonding/sealing done by a professional as it is rather a difficult process. If you do it your self then the attachments would be difficult to perform at home and you can also end up having an untidy look. The third form of extension is the most successful one known as glue hair extensions. Under this method up to 50 strands of human hair extensions are glued with protein glue and then each of these glued hair extensions are attached to your natural hair. Your hair is either parted or you are made to wear a cap having holes in it, from these holes strand of hair come out. On these strands of hair the glued extensions are connected. This hair extension form takes a lot of time to be implemented and cannot be done without professional help. When you decide to get the glue in hair, then make sure your hair is washed and clean or the extensions won’t stick to your hair properly. When it is time to remove your extensions you should again go to a salon as they will know the right technique to soften and crack the extensions, this is done only with the help of fusion remover and some specialist tools. There are also other forms as well, but the recommended one is to have glue in your hair. It is long-lasting, gives your hair a neater and a trendy look. They can also be taken off whenever you want.

How to Grow Hair Faster – Ten Long Hair Secrets
Want to be let in on long hair secrets?
Do you want to know how to grow hair faster? Do you dream of having long, flowing, beautiful hair like Rapunzel?
Well, you can stop dreaming and start growing, because it is not that hard to do.
The hardest part is having the patience to wait, because we’re sure you’ve already been told that human hair can only grow so fast. Nothing is going to make your hair grow long overnight, but there are definitely some things you can do to help speed up the process. Here, you’ll learn the long hair secrets, which start with the following fifteen key steps to growing your hair long.
1. The first step towards growing your hair is to stop damaging it. Damage can come from heat styling (flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers are a long hair don’t), brushing hair when wet, brushing or combing too roughly by ripping through knots and tangles, shampooing every day (yes, really), using accessories like metal barrettes, rubber bands, or claw clips to put your hair up, or putting your hair into tight hairstyles. If you want to grow long, healthy hair, you need to give these things up. If you absolutely must blow dry your hair, do so on the lowest setting and air dry your hair as much as possible before finishing it up with the blow dryer.
2. If your hair is already damaged, your best bet is to get a fresh start by cutting the damage off. At the very least, start your long hair growth journey by getting a trim, but if your hair has split ends, is dry, frizzy, or fragile, cut off as much as you need to to get to healthy ends. This is the hard part, but well worth it to start off with healthy hair ready to grow than it is to fight a losing battle of trying to save damaged hair. You’ll likely lose length to breakage along the way anyway when dealing with damaged hair, so you might as well just start fresh. Remember, the key to this journey is patience. In this site I will share some secrets to grow hair fast, and I’ll share even more if you subscribe to have the long hair secrets sent straight to your email, but no matter what you do, growing long hair is not an overnight thing.
3. If you are serious about growing long hair, you need to embrace your hair as it naturally is (your natural hair type). This means giving up chemicals to change the color or texture of your hair. While there are exceptions, most people will find that they need to decide between using chemicals and having long hair, because most hair types are not strong enough to withstand the repeated damage and still grow to any significant length. So to reiterate point number one – stop damaging your hair. This means no perm or straightening solution and no peroxide or ammonia. You can consider altering your hair color using no-peroxide no-ammonia color, BAQ (body art quality) henna (which actually improves the condition of hair), or other natural ways (honey lightening, etc.). And if you absolutely must use chemical color, you may be able to protect it from peroxide damage by liberally applying coconut oil before you color (coconut oil is definitely one of the long hair secrets!).

4. Protect your hair from chlorine and saltwater. Give your hair a good soaking in fresh water before you swim, and if possible use a deep conditioner and then stick it up under a swim cap. If you can, wash your hair with a chelating shampoo as quickly as you can afterwards, and at the very least, give it a good rinse in fresh water after exposure and wash as soon as possible. Condition afterwards.
5. Protect your hair from the sun and wind. If you are going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time, either use a UV protectant, or cover your hair. Or consider using a deep conditioner taking advantage of the heat to help it soak in. If you are going to be in windy conditions, braid or bun your hair, or wrap it up in a scarf or under a hat. Nothing causes split ends and tangles like wind does!
6. Treat your body right from the inside out. Eat a healthy, well balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and get enough rest. Make sure you are getting enough protein, healthy fats, and water each day. Your body needs to be healthy and nourished and performing at its best in order for it to put energy towards growing hair. Give yourself every advantage you can, by taking care of yourself. Consider using supplements to aid in your overall health and your hair growth. (Some of my hair care secrets exposed when you sign up to receive them are very effective supplements that can really help you to grow hair faster.)
7. Increase blood flow! Exercise, which increases your blood flow, is known to increase the rate at which your hair grows. Get your blood pumping, get those endorphins flowing, and get growing. Regular scalp massage will increase the blood flow and stimulate the follicles. In fact, if this is the only long hair secret you choose to follow, and you do it regularly, you will notice a boost in your hair growth. The very first thing I’ll send you is my detailed tutorial on how to do a proper scalp massage that WILL help you grow your hair faster.
8. Baby your hair, especially when wet. Do not brush your hair when it is wet, don’t rub your hair dry with a towel, instead gently pat it and let it air dry before combing and untangling. Never rip your brush through your hair or pull your brush or comb through a knot or snarl. Always gently detangle, using hair safe combs and brushes, and start from the ends and work your way up. Treat your hair like precious, fine, antique lace. Remember, as your hair grows longer it is getting older and older and has been through a lot. Even hair that has been treated gently for many years has been through many, many washes, brushings, tangles, etc. – so be gentle!
9. Stretch the time between washings. Yes, really. The majority of people with enviable long hair do not wash their hair daily. Many don’t use shampoo at all – instead they may CO (use conditioner only). Try washing your hair every other day, instead of every day, and as time goes on and your hair adjusts to that, see if you can stretch it out even further. Also, consider using the CWC method – which means condition, wash, condition. Use shampoo only on your scalp area, and diluting it is helpful. Let the suds wash down over your length as you rinse, that’s all the “washing” it needs. As your ends get older, they get drier, and do not need the harsh washing agents in shampoo to get them clean. A good rinse is all they need. Don’t pile your hair on your head when you wash, either.
10. Don’t use hot water on your hair. Wash in as cool water as you can comfortably handle, and rinse in as cold as you can stand. This will allow the cuticle to smooth out and lie flat – giving you shinier and more manageable hair. This will not only help you grow hair faster, but is also better for your skin as well.

What You Should Know About Hair Extensions
Article by Kay West
Hair extensions can give anyone the ability to have almost any hairstyle that they desire easily and almost instantly. Since your hairstyle is important to a your overall look, being happy with your hairstyle directly affects how you feel about yourself.
While hair extensions can be beneficial to problems such as your hair being cut too short or a lack of volume, they may not be able to address every problem. The first thing to do when considering hair extensions is to decide on the look you want to achieve and choose what type of material you want to use. Depending on your budget you have the choice of synthetic materials or actual human hair.
Your next decision is the time frame you want keep the hair extensions and the type of attachment you will need. Extensions woven into your natural hair can last up to eight weeks. Alternatively, if you are just looking to change your hair for an evening, using clip in extensions can easily be applied and removed in a matter of minutes.
There are some key differences between your natural hair and hair extensions which require to you to keep the extensions even cleaner than your natural hair. Since hair extensions are not growing they are not producing oils, so a good conditioner is a must. Proper washing should be done every day and after any particularly strenuous activity. Use a quality shampoo and wash them using a downward motion.
Just because they need to be maintained does not mean you cannot do anything with your hair extensions. In fact, it is quite the contrary. As long as your hair extensions are maintained well, you can do just about anything with them. You can style them with different products, curl them, straighten them, or do anything that you want. Hair extensions can even be dyed if desired. Dying hair extensions, however, can be tricky because hair extensions and your natural hair may take dye differently which may result in a look that is undesired.
With proper maintenance and care, hair extensions can last a very long time. Maintaining hair extensions is not as difficult as is commonly thought, but it does require some time and effort on the part of the wearer. The result of caring for your hair extensions, however, is more than worth the small investment required in order to maintain them. With the proper care, your hair extensions will continue to look great and provide the look that you intend for an extended period of time.

How Frequently Should You Wash Your Hair
In Western culture bathing and washing our hair is a natural custom. For some people it is a daily procedure for which they feel is necessary. Washing ones hair is required to remove dirt, oil, excess sebum and chemicals from the environment or from hair products. Washing your hair is a general practice in which most people learn from their parents, or hair care specialists (hairdresser, stylist). Where it differs is how often one should wash their hair.
Determining how often you wash your hair really comes down to personal preference. Medical and hair care professionals disagree about the amount of time in between hair washes. Some advise against frequent shampooing because it leads to an overproduction of sebum to compensate for the removal. Others recommend more frequent shampooing because an accumulation of sebum can lead to oily hair and acne production. Oily or unwashed hair is also unacceptable and unsightly in Western society. It can also feel gross or dirty. However, without sebum or natural oils, your hair becomes dry and can prematurely shed.
Today’s hair washing routines are based on a system of depleting the hair of its natural moisturizing oils by using shampoo and soap and then replenishing it with conditioners. In the 1950’s women had their hair washed and styled once a week at their hairdressers. At the beginning of the 20th century it was recommended to shampoo every two weeks or even longer once a month. It is only in recent years that shampooing daily has become a more frequent hair care practice.
To determine your own frequency of washing your hair consider your hair type, the length and thickness, the use of hair care products, and scalp or hair conditions. People with naturally oily hair should consider washing their hair daily or at least every other day. Short hair or long and fine hair tend to look greasy or oily very quickly because there is less surface area fro sebum to travel down the hair shaft. Therefore these types of hair should be washed daily or every other day. Naturally dry hair is a sign of damage therefore hair should be washed less frequently to allow natural oils to moisturize and heal the damaged hair. Specially formulated shampoos and conditioners can repair dry and damaged hair. Additionally, curly, coarse and thick hairs make it more difficult for natural oils to travel down the hair shaft. Therefore, you should only wash this type of hair 1-2 times a week. Using hair products, chemical processes or heating appliances affect how often you should wash your hair. Adding hair products to your hair causes them to build up on your hair strands. This makes it easier for dirt, dust and pollution to stick to your hair. To remove these hair products wash your hair daily. Chemical process such as perms, relaxers, bleaching or coloring makes hair more fragile. Heating tools such as blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners dry out the hair exposing it to damage. Excessive washing and drying processed or heated hair can weaken the strands even more. Therefore it is only necessary to wash this type of hair 1-2 times a week or every other day. Lastly if you have a scalp rash or condition such as dandruff, wash you hair daily to reduce oils and yeast that is causing your condition. Medicated shampoos can be used to completely eliminate rashes and flakes caused by dandruff.
If you are unsure of how often to wash your hair try washing daily for a week. Then the following week wash your hair only every other day and see how your hair is affected. If you still can’t decide on how often to wash your hair consult your hair care professional to determine your best course of action.

Golden Rule in Natural African Hair Care – Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Golden Rule in Natural African Hair Care – Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Golden Rule in Natural African Hair Care – Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
The key to healthy Black hair and growth is moisture. I just recently changed my moisturizing regiment, because while I religiously moisturized my hair, it was still very dry. I found that although I was frequenting African hair care vlogs and blogs like Curly Nikki, I wasn’t truly paying attention to what contributors were writing about. I think because my hair had grown 5 inches in 6 months (when previously I hadn’t achieved any growth due to breakage) and I completely repaired the damaged sections of my hair, I thought my moisture regiment was on point. Boy was I wrong!
First, I would mixed around three tablespoons of coconut oil and one table spoon of olive oil together and heated it up in the microwave (not too hot). I would then wet my hair, soaked it with the hot oil and put on a heat cap for about 30 minutes. Next, I would co-wash the oil out of my hair, spray in Hawaiian Silky leave-in conditioner and let my hair air dry. Once it was dry, I would moisturized my scalp with my Jojoba mix, which consists of 5 drops of Rosemary, 2 drops of Lavender to one tablespoon of Jojoba oil. I then separate my hair into 11 big sections, twist each section, put on a satin bonnet and I’m done.
With this regiment, I didn’t comb my hair much, once a month at best. I found that detangling with my fingers while co-washing worked just fine. Its common knowledge in the natural African hair care community that our hair isn’t supposed to be combed or brushed too much and not combing worked for me when I grew my hair out over the winter.
My hair would only remain supple for ONE day on this regiment. It would literally be dried out on the second day even after re-spritzing with the leave-in. I do co-wash two to three times a week, one because I can’t stand that frowsy hair smell and two, washing allows me to get some moisture. Although some may consider 3 co-washes a week a bit much for dry hair, its the only way I can get that suppleness back.
My hair had always been super, duper dry and I just thought I had to live with that fact and do whatever I could to keep it moist for as long as possible. After sticking with this treatment for eight months I realized there should be something I could do to stay moisturized, so I started researching again. I spent a couple of hours on Curly Nikki as opposed to just browsing for a few minutes and low and behold, I came across a post from a sista with baddest Afro I have ever seen in my life! One of the first things she talked about was how dry her hair is and she went on to outline her moisture regiment.
When she co-washes, she uses around five different types of conditioner together and she doesn’t rinse it out! Further, if she feels her hair was getting a little dry between co-washes, she’ll spritz in more conditioner! I first thought that all of that conditioner would cause a lot of build-up and eventually be damaging, but the truth is everything the mainstream teaches us about natural African hair care is backward. We can basically do the opposite of what other people do with their hair, especially in the case of conditioning. After all, look at her hair! She’s maintained this regiment for the better part of six years and her hair is gorgeous, so all of that conditioning must be working!
As I researched on, I came across a post about sealing with oil. The post described how sealing locks in what ever type of moisturizer you are using and aids in keeping your hair moisturized. I’ve never sealed my hair. I figured since I hot oil treated my hair, oiled my scalp and used a very rich leave-in, I didn’t need to put in any more oil. However, it was still very dry between co-washes, even when I added more leave-in, so whatever I was doing wasn’t working and my hair was telling me it was time for something new.
So, when co-wash day rolled around, I dove right into this sista’s moistureregiment. I co-washed with Garnier Fruictis Triple Nutrition and Suave Almond and Shea conditioner. I repeated the co-wash three times and on the third time, I didn’t rinse it out. To seal it, I mixed Shea butter and coconut oil together until the consistency was a little thinner than normal Shea butter, but not too oily. After my hair dried, I coated it liberally with the mix, but I didn’t saturate it. I didn’t use the Jojoba oil mix this time, because I wanted this regiment to be completely different to see what the results would be. I twisted my hair up as usually and put on my satin cap.
For this regiment, I combed and brushed my hair! I used a wide-tooth comb and a Con Air vented brush with the balls at the tips of the bristles. Although natural African hair care science doesn’t condone too much combing and brushing, a lot of sistas comb and brush on a regular basis and their hair is fine. So, with this new regiment, I combed my hair out while co-washing and brushed it after putting in the Shea butter/coconut oil seal. Again, trying something new!
I must say, my hair is so dry, I didn’t expect much difference. I actually felt my hair might be a bit too greasy and I would have to modify my hair style. LET ME TELL YOU!! When I took my twists out, I couldn’t believe it! My hair wasn’t greasy AT ALL and it was completely stretched out (shrinkage is a problem for naturals). Usually, when I take out my twists and style my hair, it poofs out into an Afro. This time, my hair laid straight down curly, as if it was being weighed down, but without the greasy, heavy feeling. I can’t believe it! My hair literally drank the Shea Butter and coconut oil seal and I think for the first time in a long time its truly happy!
I went to a festival that day and literally, the first sista I passed by stopped me to ask me about my hair – Shout Out to Lovita! – and needless to say I was a little excited to tell her all about my new conditioning method! I’ve only done it twice and my hair looks so good, I’m not worried about build up. I’ll probably shampoo my hair a couple times per month just to clarify it.
From now on, I’m going to follow natural African hair care science to the letter – Shout out to Curly Nikki! Sistas that take the time to post information about natural African hair care REALLY know what they’re talking about, just look at their hair! I had to learn that if my hair doesn’t look good, its not getting what it wants and needs and instead of figuring I know everything there is to know, I should take some advice and do something different.

Human Hair Extensions – Hair Solutions Without A Bias
The market for hair extensions is huge and is growing by the minute. People use extensions for all kind of reasons, such as hair-loss or for simply enhancing the way they look. Now-a-days people want change and want to change their hairstyles even before they get them. However, sadly there are only so many hairstyles that you can get after a hair-cut. Hence, it becomes imperative to take the help of accessories like hair extensions to enhance your looks. And it is not just celebrities who are using them today. Everyone, whether it is a school going kid or a married woman is using hair extensions to get the latest look. There is no bias of age or class when it comes to using hair extensions.
Hair extensions are made up of either human hair or synthetic fibers each of which comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Human hair extensions are preferred because of their superior quality and durability. They can also be styled and designed better than synthetic hair because they are natural and can resist the pressure and heat of iron curlers and straighteners. Human hairs have the cuticle layer intact on them and also all the cuticles on high quality human hair extensions are processed such that they are in the same direction. This gives two advantages, firstly, the cuticle layer reflects light which makes them shine and secondly because of them being in one line, they remain tangle free and free flowing.

Extensions made of human hairs can be made by two ways, one is by directly cutting human hair and processing it which is called Remy hair and other is by collecting fallen hair (collected from salons) and processing them to form hair extensions which is called non Remy hair. This is the cheaper option in human hair and needless to say the former extensions are higher in quality as they have all cuticles in one direction and possess the advantages illustrated earlier. The latter extensions (the non Remy ones) are not of the same high quality as the natural ones and are prone to get tangled and get worn off in a very small period of time.
The qualities of extensions which are made of fallen human hairs or the non Remy ones have been identified as being of three types, namely, quality A, quality B and quality C. Quality A hair is the premium quality hair which has all the cuticles smoothed and arranged in one direction and which has all the hairs present in one size on the weft. These extensions in their category of non Remy hair give the best look to the wearer; they are also cheap and easily available.
Quality B is the middle quality hair where although the cuticles are arranged in the same direction and thus give a smooth finish, the hair lengths in the weft are of 2 inch difference. However, there are no short hairs. It is almost similar to quality A type of hair and is superior to quality C type of hair.
Quality C is similar to A and B. However, it has hairs of different lengths in the weft which does not give it the smoothest of finish. This hair should be your last option while choosing the quality of the hair extensions. Choose Remy hair always and if you can’t, chose quality a non Remy.

What Is The History Of Hair Extensions?
Article by suzlar
You wouldn’t be alone in thinking that hair extensions are a recent phenomenon as they didn’t really gain mass appeal till the 2000’s, however as far back as Egyptian times both men and women have worn wigs or hair pieces to improve the way they looked. Even the Egyptians were slaves to fashion and there is documented proof that hair extensions and wigs were used as far back as 3400BC. And it seems that some things never change as back in these times as it is today, the prices and quality of extensions varied greatly. The highest quality being made of 100% human hair with the lowest quality extensions being made out of anything that the people could get their hands on, including vegetable fibres and sheep wool. Of course, the Egyptians did not have the luxury of the technically advanced methods of application that we now enjoy and it is thought that a full head of hair extensions would have taken 15 hours of intricate weaves and knots.
Wigs, hair extensions and hair pieces have come in and out of fashion in nearly every century and in Georgian times high false wigs were in vogue in both men and women. These wigs were elaborate, intricate and exquisitely beautiful. However, following the Georgian fashion and as we stepped in to the 1800’s extensions, wigs and hair pieces actually became frowned upon. Men wouldn’t be seen dead in a wig during this time and women chose to wear their hair in a more natural and neat style. However, the appeal of fake hair swung into fashion again in the Romantic era. This era saw the elaborate Apollo knots becoming very much the fashion and the more elaborate the better.
False hair saw a dip in popularity after the Romantic era only to be dragged back in to fashion by the mid Victorian era. The Victorians favoured elaborate hair styles that could only be achieved by false hair. In fact hair extensions, hair pieces and wigs were so popular that the Victorian era saw 102 tonnes of hair sold in France in 1873 alone.
False hair became in vogue again for the early 20th century Edwardian women. They wore false hair additions to create the popular Pompadour hairstyle that was thought to make a woman look like she was wearing a teapot on her head!
Stepping into the 1920’s and women abandoned their hair pieces for a look that was natural with many women sporting much shorter looks than ever before. Women were living in a time when almost everything luxurious was rationed and they tended to favour practicality over style in this period.
The 1950’s saw women enjoying shorter bob styles and more youthful styles such as the ponytail, no need for extensions here. By the turn of the century the simple ponytail was transformed into complicated elegant French plaits and chignons. The 1960’s sparked a revisit to the world of big hair and with this came hair a demand for hair pieces and wigs. The 1960’s and 70’s was a great time to reinvent yourself and many people used hair pieces and wigs to create different identities and styles from day to day.
By the 1980’s the interest in hair pieces and wigs had worn off and people were turning to more natural styles with only performers and celebrities still using false hair for big impact on the stage. During the majority of the 1900’s hair extensions weren’t popular as the cost of the hair was massive and they were seen as a luxury that only the rich and famous could afford to indulge in. However, over the last few years the hair extensions industry has boomed. The cost is now a lot more affordable for the public to try out and the extensive range of application methods really do mean that there is something for everyone. Nowadays, hair extensions are not just a luxury that celebrities can afford as more and more of us are deciding to invest our hard earned cash in a new, versatile look and are loving the results.
