Maintaining Your Hair Extensions that Look Hot Off the Red-Carpet
Article by Suzanne Greenfield
One of the main misconceptions that are made about hair extensions is that they are incredibly high maintenance. It is this misconception that causes many to shun the idea of investing in this form of hair beauty, instead opting for clip in extensions that may not provide them with the same look they desire for their hair. Although hair extensions do require some form of maintenance, it does not stem any further than the level of maintenance you would give to your natural hair.
When you have your hair extensions applied professionally, your stylist will provide you with advice on how to keep your extensions looking and feeling great for as long as possible. Not only is this information important in order to keep their great appearance, but also to help make them a worthwhile investment and ensure that you get complete value for your money.
One of the first points that will be made to you is to refrain from washing your hair for at least 2 days after application. This rule is set in order to allow the extensions time to set fully as washing your extensions so soon after application may cause the bonds to fall out or become loose. After this time, you will be free to wash your hair but it is important to not be too vigorous when washing so there is as little stress placed on the bonds as possible. Washing your hair excessively will cause a great deal of stress due to the weight of water absorbed, so try to limit your washing to a few times a week. Whenever washing your hair, try to deeply condition your hair to help stop your extensions from drying out which in turn, will help to keep them looking great for as long as possible.
Once your extensions have been washed and conditioned, they will be ready to be styled. One of the main benefits of investing in natural hair extensions over synthetics is that they can be styled and treated just like your natural hair. Ensure that you use nourishing products when using heated styling products to protect both your hair and the extensions to stop them from becoming dry or brittle. The more nourished your hair is, the more you can style it without worry of heat damage. Natural hair extensions can be easily blow dried, straightened and curled so they are extremely versatile, taking you from day to night in a flash. However, when using heated styling equipment, ensure to not place them directly on the bonds as this can cause them to become loose. Furthermore, the versatility of hair extensions allows you to dye them but before doing this, always consult with your stylist first to ensure you use the correct dye that will both flatter your hair and be safe for the extensions. If you don?t wish to make such a huge commitment as this, opt for extensions that are already coloured as these will have been treated beforehand and you will have the option of applying a range of shades for a true celebrity style.
Just as your natural hair requires maintenance in regards to keeping it clean, conditioned and smooth, the same can be said for your hair extensions. In order to keep your hair looking great from the off, it is advisable to only visit a salon that has thorough experience in applying extensions. However, once you leave the salon it is up to you to keep your locks look smooth, beautiful and truly worthy of the red-carpet, or the high street!
